In the spring of 2002, Larry Williams gathered a small group of concerned individuals into his home to confront a troubling reality: the alarming data surrounding inner-city males in Orlando, Florida. The numbers identified several glaring facts. Namely, disproportionate rates of incarceration, unemployment, poor educational outcomes, and declining health across both local, state, and even national levels. In addition, these systemic challenges not only affected the men themselves but impacted their families and communities negatively.
Armed with this knowledge and motivated by a shared sense of urgency and purpose, the small group united on a mission to uplift and support inner-city males. They agreed and incorporated the non-profit, Simeon Resource Center, Inc (SRC) aka Simeon. Their mission statement being: Creating partnerships that foster optimal health and self-sufficiency. Some 23 years later, Simeon Resource Center has transitioned from solely helping inner-city males, to meeting the broader needs of the community. Today, over 50% of the individuals assisted are women-proudly reflecting Simeon’s commitment to inclusivity and responsiveness to those who need them most.
